Long time- no talk. I did not actually fall off the planet, I was just trying to graduated nursing school ya’ll. Without going into a small dissertation I will just say mission accomplished and pending passing the NCLEX I should have “RN” behind my name shortly. PTL! But enough about that for now- I have been dying to tell ya’ll ALL about our latest trip to Destin for months now. Since my life is my own again here goes nothing 😉
Some of you may remember but last year during Hurricane Irma we evacuated to Destin, Florida which was our first trip there. Despite the unfortunate circumstances of evacuation- we were in LOVE!!!! We weren’t able to stay very long due to Mr. MT’s work obligations (he kinda does a small thing called turn electricity back on) and for some strange reason his employer wanted him back ASAP after the storm lol. Go figure. Anyways- we said that we saw enough to know we wanted to go back!
Fast forward through one scary drive home, four days without power after we got home, emptying an entire fridge freezer once there, downed tree, and a brand new roof and that’s about what we came home to. All I could think about through it all was Destin and how soon I could get back there.
Roughly six months later I was able to con the hubs into heading back to have a proper Destin introduction. Insert Sugar Palm Vacation Rentals! Check them out HERE. I knew we wanted to stay somewhere right on the beach this time and mission accomplished. We wanted somewhere much smaller and more quaint than the skyscraper( aka the palms) that we had stayed in during the evacuation. Sugar Palm has around 50+ different properties of all sizes and I was able to easily sift through and find an amazing condo right ON the water that was perfect for our needs. The pictures don’t fully do the condo or the beach justice but when we opened the door the views literally took my breath away! This condo was actually one of the very nicest condos we have ever stayed in and we have tried quiet a few by now. The balcony made you feel like you could jump off right into the ocean you were so close. It was REALLY convienent to be this close with children because you could go back and forth from the beach to room very easily which meant we did not have to haul everything and the kitchen sink down with us 🙂 Not to mention there was a dozen donuts from The Donut Hole ( more on this later) waiting on us when we checked in- I mean is this real life people???
Our condo was located at Henderson State park beach located right next to the famous Henderson Park Inn. The sand at this beach is JUST like powdered sugar and the water is ***exactly*** the clarity of pool water with a deep turquoise hue. It is seriously the most beautiful beach I think I have ever seen. But I want to warn you in all seriousness, once you have been to this beach other beaches will never excite you the same again. I just want you to know because no one warned me first and now every other beach is somewhat sub-par. Just call me a newly minted beach snob I guess?! It could always be worse.
During this trip we also uncovered the two best things Destin has to offer period besides the world class beaches….. 1. Royal Red Shrimp and 2. Shakes Custard. I love shrimp. And what I mean by this is I love them Like Bubba Gump loved shrimp and that is how I love shrimp. Almost every time we go out to eat that is what I get. I have had them all. Everywhere. Cooked every way. I can only liken trying these Royal Red shrimp to what it must be like for a person who can’t see well to get glasses. These shrimp are life changing. These shrimp were only recently discovered and previously unheard of. These little red jewels are a delicacy, gift from God, and as far as I know can mainly only be found in this area. These shrimp are found at depths greater than 600 feet which is almost twice as deep than the usual run of the mill white shrimp. When I tell you that they tase EXACTLY like lobster tail and I am as serious as I can be. Life. Changing. We stopped by a local fish market one night and picked up a few pounds along with the fixins’ and ate until we about exploded. Don’t go to Destin without tracking down some Royal Reds. You are welcome in advance.
The 2nd gift that Destin offered us was Shake’s Custard. We found heaven in a cup at Shakes. I really don’t know what custard is, what is in it, or how it is made but what I do know is that when I got to the bottom of the cup I thought about crying. Shake’s offers any and every topping you can imagine to go in or on your custard concoction and if the steady line there day round is any indication of the amazing-ness of this establishment then you know it is VERY good.
If you do not listen to any of my other recommendations P L E A S E promise me friend you will try some Royal Reds and a custard from Shakes and then let me know how different the world looks!
If the beach were not enough reason to love Destin, then the food really seals the deal friends. Out. Of. This. World. It was SO hard to decide which restaurants to try because there were so gosh darn many that looked and sounded sooo good. I will go into my favorite places in a post soon dedicated just to that. In the meantime, I hope everyone has some fabulous summer plans in the works. If you are looking for a great vacation option for your family then I can not recommend Destin, or the Gulf Coast, enough. It really is the ultimate Destination for all families.

Wishing you a fabulous start to the Summer
