I hope you are having a fantastic summer day! We have been celebrating lately here at the MT household because I found out Monday that I officially passed the NCLEX and I am now a registered nurse!!! Yay! We are in shock/celebration mode around here. But after close to three years total I am happy to have my life back. That also means I have a lot more time to dedicate to this blog and you all- even bigger YAY! I decided it seemed like a good time to plan a celebratory trip and so I have been in the thick of all of that FUN! Hey, anything is more fun than the NCLEX ( can I get an Amen from all my nursing friends???) I had a nursing school friend, also has young children, that recently reach out to me and inquire about some Destin “must do’s” since she knew we had recently been. I was trying to think of all of the fantastic places we ate that week and which one I absolutely enjoyed the most. Without a doubt, I would have to say Dewey Destin’s was probably my all around favorite!
Dewey Destin’s had been highly recommended by Sugar Palm Rentals which was the company we rented our condo through. You can read more about Sugar Palm and the condo we stayed in here. This particular day was rainy and overcast and so we decided we would head to the Gulfarium just down the road in Fort Walton ( hope to get post on Gulfarium soon). When I looked up Dewey Destin’s online I found out they actually had two locations in Destin, Crab Island location and Destin Harbor location serving lunch and dinner. DD’s Destin Harbor location is just off of the main strip in Destin and was not very far from our condo. Dewey Destin’s Crab Island location is on the bay and headed out of Destin towards Fort Walton. Winner Winner. I punched the address into the GPS and we were off. Now let me warn you of this, as we followed the directions it told us to make several turns down some alleys that looked a bit desolate and my husband declared we had definitely made a wrong turn somewhere. I assured him we should just keep going as the GPS is never, ever wrong 😉 We passed several trucks with men unloading tons of fresh seafood so I felt like we were headed in the right direction. We finally came to a large dirt parking lot that was quite full already and right at the edge of the bay. Another great sign. As we walked up I could tell the restaurant was built over the water and I was already in love. If you are looking for fancy smancy then Dewey Destin is probably not for you friend. If you are looking for UH-MAZING fresh seafood, with simple presentation at a great price then keep reading.
So, DD’s is a very small and basic building built directly over the water. I would say it could be best described as an old fish camp type feel. But don’t let the lack of frills fool ya! What Dewey Destin’s lacks in “fancy” in makes up for with it’s seafood and view. This is the type of place you don’t have to get dressed up for or break the bank in order to eat some seriously delicious seafood. I am the first to say sometimes own vacation you just want to throw on something fast, skip the make-up, add a hat and roll with it. So far we have 1. On the water 2. Don’t have to dress up 3. Crazy good food 4. Family friendly AND 5. Reasonable. I. AM. IN. There is TONS of outdoor seating with umbrellas if it is a beautiful day. On the day we went it was chilly and rainy so we opted for the indoor seating. I was a bit sad it did not work out to eat outside because that view was SUPER and outdoor dining is my fav. Inside were quite a few picnic style tables with benches. I was elated not to have to worry about Mr. P spilling food all over the fine table cloth or just generally making a mess as all littles like to do. We found a small counter in the back where you order your food. All of the employees were super nice, helpful, and very happy to make recommendations.
They had every kind of fresh seafood that a person could want. They had seafood baskets, sandwiches, cold adult beverages, and they even had displayed fresh, uncooked seafood by the pound ( or whole fish) that they would season and steam for you. You can find their full menu here. DD’s also has the famous Royal Red shrimp that I fell in love with ( check out this post for more on that too). Mr. MT and I opted for the fried shrimp, my personal go to, and P got a hot dog that looked unbelievable! Everything in my basket was fantastic. The shrimp had been perfectly battered and fried in a way that was neither greasy or overly breaded. They were HUGE gulf shrimp too and had a wonderful juicy texture. The fries were beer battered and were probably the best little golden pieces of heaven I have ever had. I am pretty picky when it comes to coleslaw and there is truly an art to making the perfect coleslaw. Whatever that art is these people know about it. The hushpuppies also left nothing to be desired and I am pretty sure P and I “rock, paper, scissored” for the last one. Once we had scarfed down our delicious lunch we walked out on the deck to enjoy the beautiful but chilly view. The view is stellar and from what I understand during the summer this is a very desirable area given the close proximity to the famed Crab Island where tons of boats anchor in the shallow, turquoise gulf waters.
I absolutely can not wait to go back and check out Dewey Destin’s Crab Island location in the warmer months so I can enjoy sitting on the deck and that dynamite view some more. I also want to try their other location on the harbor because every time we rode by it was slam packed- not surprising now that I have seen what the fuss is about . In addition, DD’s is building a new location just down the road in Navarre Beach. When I read this information this morning I am almost fell off the barstool because guess where we are headed next month??? You guessed it! Navarre Beach!!!!!! I am hoping that it is up and running by then because I can’t wait to eat there again. If you head to Destin this summer, or anytime for that matter, please do yourself a favor and checkout one of their awesome locations. I am certain you and your family will be so pleased you did! If you need more info you can find a link to their website here with even more Dewey Destin goodness.
With love and beer battered fries,
