This last weekend my husband suggested we go over to Saint Simons Island and stay for a few days at our aunt’s condo!! Completely burned out, I was more than excited for a little staycation!
The weather was pretty grim the 3 days that we were there so we mostly hung out inside and watched movies ( I studied ). The great thing about a staycation is that you are either at your house OR at a relative’s house ( Thanks Aunt J!) and this frees up extra cash to do some activities or dining out that maybe you wouldn’t normally splurge on- YES please!!! In this instance due to weather and my study needs we weren’t able to do any activities but we did decide to eat out for dinner several meals while we were there. I had every intention of writing several posts on several of the locations we ate at, one of which is my husband’s favorite. Frankly, this time there was not much positive to report on any of those places we tried. Don’t you hate with that happens ? Especially on staycation.
I decided rather than write a bad or mediocre review, I just would not review at all anywhere that we didn’t really enjoy or love. I will let your mind run wild here my friends ! In their defense it was a holiday weekend for lots of tourist so I will chalk it up to that and maybe try those again soon and report back.
Both of the meals I am referring to as being less than blog worthy were actually pretty pricey. But it illustrates an important point, more expensive and exclusive does not always equal a good experience or good value for your money. Each meal I found myself wishing I was back at one of my all time favorite locations in this area which happens to be located in Brunswick and less than five miles from my house- Marshside Grill. It is one of our family’s ALL time favorite places to eat, like 3-5 times a month on average. It is so reasonably priced and delicious. It is in my list of top five favorite places to eat in this area. It is our go to I guess you could say.
The view is one of my favorites here on the coast ( several attached above). They have a large outdoor porch with tons of tables and when the weather is just right it is a wonderful place to eat and enjoy the water! If you haven’t picked up on this trend yet I really love eating outside when I have my smallest love with me. I think that outside is just so forgiving when you have a toddler than can’t sit still( my kid ). I am always so worried we are disturbing other diners around us so if outdoor seating is available and the weather is nice that is my go to.
If you are lucky you can watch the shrimp boats coming in or going out as they dock right by the porch ( additional free entertainment for the smallest member of our party). You have a wonderful marsh view of St. Simons Island and Jekyll Island. If you look closely you may even see some dolphins playing in the river. I have also been fortunate enough to enjoy the porch dining when they had a live band outside and that was really wonderful.
As far as the actual food is concerned it is really great! When we have family in town or a special event I always recommend Marshside because they have a tremendous variety of food options as well as several different price points. We have a few picky eaters in my family and we can always easily find something to please everyone. No matter what your budget is you can something here that won’t break the bank! Typically when we go out to eat I try to get seafood as we are so blessed to have such wonderful, fresh seafood in our area. However, as much as I love fried shrimp ( and believe me I do), when we go to Marshside I almost always have to get the fried chicken tender basket ( also above). Don’t misunderstand, the fried shrimp here are crazy good here too. But I can never get these fingers out of my mind. I have no earthly idea what they do to these chicken fingers but they are incredible. Seriously! I have never had any nearly as good as their’s. Please forgive me for this next statement and I can not believe I am writing it but I promised to be extremely honest. Here it goes, their chicken fingers are better than Chik-fil-a. Ahh the blasphemy! And friends, I LOVE Chik-fil-a.Like, I am obsessed and could eat there every single day love Chik-fil-a, but Marshside still has better fried chicken fingers. Whatever you do make SURE you get the honey sauce. It sends these little fried bits of heaven to the moon!
The other thing Marshside has that you will not find anywhere else is SPUDS (also above with chicken fingers)! OMG. Spuds are a wonderful french fry-esque potato round straight out of your grandmother’s kitchen! Holy moly, My mouth is watering just thinking about them. The restaurant is very large so there is almost always plenty of seating. And you never feel squished- anyone else hate that? Inside Marshside has a cool, coastal casual vibe and you can get away with wearing anything from t-shirt and shorts to something more dressy and you will fit in just fine. It has such an understated and unpretentious vibe and I adore that!
There is a large bar towards the back where they can whip up any cocktail concoction you can dream up or any other cold adult beverage. Everything is reasonably priced and the portions of food are so generous., especially the kid’s menu ( grilled cheese with fries above). Next time you decide to have a vacation, staycation, or a day visit to this area, make sure you visit Marshside Grill. I can assure you that it will not disappoint. Make sure you check out some of the other awesome things to do in this area including Driftwood beach on Jekyll Island. It’s just a hop, skip, and a jump over the bridge from Marshside!
Much travel love,
